Facts and History

Sara

Sara arrived in September from Warrnambool, Australia and will stay at Edmund Rice until December. She has been teaching Form Two, Form Four and Form One English and aiding in Geography tutorials. She has also taken up the role as the Form One and Form Four Matron of the hostel and boarding. Sara has loved being with the kids and will miss Arusha, especially Edmund Rice when she has to return home to do university.

Catherine Ryan

Catherine is a teacher from Victoria, Australia. She arrived in August and has been working in the special program with the Form one students. She has had a great time teaching them and helping them become more confident in speaking English. Special program students taught Catherine a lot of valuable lessons. Catherine says that it will be very difficult to leave them at the end of the year.

Sharyn O'Connor

Sharyn is 29 years old from Brisbane, Australia and is volunteering for 3 months. Sharyn is a qualified Accountant who is enjoying helping out with the Form 4 and Form 2 Bookkeeping classes. She is also assisting with Food & Nutrition classes and secretarial professional development. Sharyn is enjoying working at Edmund Rice and has found it a wonderful opportunity to get to know the staff, students and the local community.

Conor Finn

Conor is a Secondary Teacher from Brisbane, Australia. He is 29 years old with a Masters in Educational Leadership. He is teaching the Special Program class. Special Program is an English Intensive course covering Math’s, Drama, Physical Education, Home Economics, Music, Religion and English. The aim of special program is excellence in teaching and learning.

Debbie Frank

Debbie Frank arrived at the beginning of September from New Zealand and will be here for a year. Debbie has taken a year’s leave from her position as Administrator for the St Vincent de Paul Society in Christchurch. While Debbie is at Edmund Rice Sinon she will be spending most of her time in the new library.

Alex Wren

Alex is from Melbourne, Australia. Previously Alex has worked at a specialist School and has deferred University to come and volunteer in Tanzania for 3 months. Alex has worked with the Form One and Form Two and some of the A level students. ALex has loved her time at Edmund Rice Sinon, Working with the students and experienceing the Tanzanian lifestyle.

Denis

Denis is 22 years old from Melbourne, Australia. Denis is taking leave from study for a year to volunteer at Edmund Rice. He is teaching Physics, Chemistry and English to the Form Two's and Math’s to the Form Five and Six students. After three months at Edmund Rice, Denis will be very sad to leave and will miss the friendships he has made with students, teachers and other volunteers.

Brenton Carey

Brenton is from Melbourne Australia. He is studying International Development and has deferred to be at Edmund Rice for 3months. He is loving the interaction he has with the Form One and Two students and has been assisting them with English and Math's. Brenton loves life here in Tanzania and is enjoying each of his experience in Africa.

Sharon O'Keeffe

Sharon has been connected with the Edmund Rice Network in NSW for the last ten years. It was this connection that inspired her to offer her talents to the Edmund Rice Volunteer Scheme. Sharon is passionate about justice and continues this work at the Sinon. Throughout the year she has been involved in Speical Program, Geography classes and extra curricula activities. Her highlights include initiating Edmund Rice Weekend Camps, 'Awakening' the AIDS Awareness Club, facilitating retreats and motivation seminars for A level students and co-presenting Power On for the Form 4 girls. Her greatest achievemnt in 2007 was creating a wonderful school library from 'scratch'. Sharon thoroughly enjoys working with the Edmund Rice Sinon community and is looking forward to working with the new administration for 2008.

Rachel Mclean

Rachel arrived at Edmund Rice at the beginning of 2007 with the hope to immerse herself into life at Sinon. She has successfully done this through her work both in and outside the classroom. Rachel has thoroughly enjoyed being an English teacher for forms 4-6 and the class teacher of 4A. Her passion and love of cooking has been fostered through her mentoring in the Nutrition classroom. Outside of the classroom Rachel has been involved as co-coach of the netball team, facilitator of retreats and motivation seminars for A level students and co-presenting the Power On program for the Form 4 girls. Rachel looks forward to continuing her work with the community into 2008
